The exhibition is dedicated to Ruth Asawa, the Japanese-American artist and sculptor whose work was long underestimated but in recent years has received the recognition it deserves. For the identity, inspiration was drawn from upcoming exhibitions of her work, first in San Francisco and later in New York.
Asawa’s story is inseparable from her heritage and life circumstances: as the daughter of Japanese immigrants, a woman, and an Asian American, she faced discrimination, yet her art became an expression of strength, resilience, and creative exploration. Her family was subjected to incarceration in internment camps during World War II. This experience left a deep mark on the artist; however, she believed that through suffering something good emerged, and that her character and opportunities in life were shaped by this trial.
The typographic identity is based on the image of her most iconic works — translucent, intricate wire sculptures. These graceful pieces convey a sense of fluidity and lightness: they interact with space, light, and shadow, evoking movement and delicacy while at the same time suggesting stability and strength.
In the identity, the forms of her sculptures are reimagined through the letters of her name. They intertwine into recognizable figures, sometimes rounded, sometimes geometric, merging into new woven patterns. This is complemented by gray informational typography that playfully echoes the motifs, occasionally intersecting with them yet always remaining legible. The identity is executed entirely in black and white, without color accents.
