Black River Wine by Berik Yergaliyev

Black River Wine by Berik Yergaliyev

Task & Solution
The goal was to create a wine label that would not only stand out on a crowded shelf, but also reflect the quiet sophistication, cultural richness, and refined aesthetics characteristic of Japanese winemaking. It had to appeal to both wine connoisseurs and design-savvy consumers looking for products that express authenticity and craft. The design needed to communicate elegance, restraint, and a deep sense of intentionality — qualities found both in traditional Japanese art and in high-quality wine.

The final concept draws inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in simplicity, impermanence, and imperfection. At the heart of the design is a torn paper motif — a seemingly simple visual gesture that holds rich metaphorical meaning. It suggests the idea of unveiling or discovering something hidden and precious, much like the layered experience of tasting a thoughtfully crafted wine. With each sip, new aromas and textures emerge — just as each glance at the label reveals another subtle detail.

The silhouette created by the tear also resembles a river gently winding between two forms, evoking the poetic image of a landscape divided by water. This subtle visual serves as a nod to the name “Black River,” grounding the concept in a sense of place and narrative.

Minimalist typography, a balanced layout, and the tactile quality of the paper finish were carefully chosen to enhance the sensory experience and convey a sense of understated luxury. The result is not just a label, but a visual and emotional invitation to pause, to savor, and to appreciate — much like the Japanese way of honoring the present moment with intention and grace.
