The Legend of Cognac Raynaud Magnified by Compair Design Studio

Compair Design Studio was commissioned to create the full packaging identity for the new prestige range of Cognac Raynaud, encompassing the VSOP, XO, and XXO expressions under the evocative name “La Légende de Renorville.”

The creative approach was driven by a desire to express both the historical roots and the sensory evolution of cognac—through material, structure, and finish. The central narrative draws from a key piece of the Raynaud family’s heritage: La Chapelle de la Renorville, a centuries-old chapel located amidst the family vineyards, where the aging potential of cognac was first discovered.

This led to the creation of a wraparound label featuring a soft gradient from white to cognac, symbolizing the transformation of the white eau-de-vie into its amber, aged form. The label design is both structural and emotional, seamlessly merging storytelling and technique.

Design Features & Technical Breakdown:

Label Material: Cotton Extra White by Avery Dennison — selected for its tactile softness, premium grain, and ability to support multiple high-end finishes.

Printing Process: Quadri + spot color with controlled ink densities to achieve a smooth chromatic transition.

Hot Foil Stamping: Luxor 418 by Kurz — applied in double pass for enhanced texture and a soft patinated gold effect.

Deep Embossing: Custom copper plate used for the high-relief rendering of the templar knight — a symbolic element, evoking both protection and legend.

Die-cut Detailing: A deliberate aperture was cut into the label at the site of the chapel illustration, revealing the glass and anchoring the narrative to the product itself.

Structural Label Design: The label was engineered to follow the bottle’s curvature with high precision, creating a seamless 360° wrap with no distortion or lift — a delicate operation requiring micro-adjustments during die-line prototyping.

The entire visual system was built to evoke a sense of reverence and timelessness, enhancing the perceived value of the bottle and reinforcing its position in the ultra-premium cognac market. Through tactile hierarchy, foil contrast, and crafted paper volumes, the design is not only seen but deeply felt.

Design Philosophy:

At Compair Design Studio, we believe that packaging is not merely a protective shell, but a storytelling surface — a sensory interface between brand, product, and consumer. With La Légende de Renorville, our goal was to materialize memory, elevate heritage, and craft an object of desire, rooted in both the soil and the soul of Cognac.
