“Pomelo Mooncake” is a conceptual mooncake gift box packaging designed by K LASER Design Lab. for the 2024 Moon Festival. This creative gift box features a unique filling made from pomelos grown locally in Madou, Tainan, Taiwan. The packaging introduces a playful and interactive idea of “peeling a pomelo” as the method to open the box, offering an engaging experience that not only celebrates the festival but also the joy of unboxing.

The exterior of the packaging mimics the way a pomelo’s thick peel covers its sweet and juicy flesh. It features an image of a single pomelo, complemented by a vertical tear line. This tear line guides consumers intuitively to peel open the box from both sides, just like peeling a pomelo, to reveal the mooncakes inside. As the box is opened, the rich, fragrant aroma of the mooncakes fills the air, enhancing the sensory experience and adding to the excitement.

The design concept continues from the inside out, embodying the theme of “mooncakes hidden inside a pomelo.” The outer visuals feature three different artistic styles of peeling a pomelo, subtly evoking sweet and loving memories of eating pomelo together with family and friends during the Moon Festival. The top cover showcases an image of a large pomelo, and when lifted, it reveals a base layer adorned with four delicately arranged pomelo mooncakes. The act of removing the mooncakes mirrors the joyful surprise of peeling a pomelo, creating a fun and memorable unboxing experience. Additionally, a folded leaflet about the pomelo mooncakes is included, providing more insight into the unique ingredients and adding depth to the overall experience.

To complement the gift box, there are four greeting cards, each featuring pomelo elements that echo the four pomelo mooncakes inside. These cards allow the giver to share the joy and warmth of the season with family and friends, spreading happiness and celebrating togetherness. The thoughtful design of the gift box, from the playful unboxing experience to the sentimental gift cards, offers a perfect way to share the holiday spirit and create lasting memories.
