Ali Rahmani Designs a Shiraz Wine Label That Honors Persian Heritage

Ali Rahmani Designs a Shiraz Wine Label That Honors Persian Heritage

This design was created for the Rosmey brand in Australia.

A key principle I adhere to throughout my packaging design process is the thorough research of a product’s historical background, what I refer to as Cultural and Historical Research in Design. This approach is vital in ensuring that the final design is not only visually appealing but also communicates the product’s identity and authenticity, deeply resonating with its cultural roots. In today’s world, if you search for Shiraz wine on Google, you’ll find countless companies around the globe producing wine under that name. However, the name Shiraz is deeply rooted in Iranian history, tracing back to the Achaemenid era, a time when wine was cherished in royal courts and Zoroastrian temples. This long-standing tradition persisted for centuries, and Shiraz wine was produced in Iran until 1979, being exported to numerous countries worldwide. After production ceased in Iran, Australia—particularly the Barossa Valley—revived the name Shiraz and transformed it into one of the world’s most renowned wines. Understanding this rich historical context, it becomes crucial to preserve the authentic Iranian identity of the product. To honor this heritage, the label design integrates Khatai art, which is the second of the seven traditional Persian arts that were established during the Safavid era, a period regarded as the peak of Persian artistic achievement. The intricate, interwoven curves found within Khatai art mirror the twisting vines and clustered grape stems of an Iranian vineyard, further enhancing the product’s connection to its roots and showcasing its authenticity. Through this design, I aim to create a narrative that links past and present, ensuring that Shiraz wine maintains its cultural integrity while also standing proudly in the global market.
