Fins Studio Fuses Vietnamese and Japanese Traditions in Tết (Lunar New Year) Visual Identity

Fins Studio Fuses Vietnamese and Japanese Traditions in Tết (Lunar New Year) Visual Identity

The Tết holiday is far more than a simple transition from one year to the next—it is a profound celebration of reunion, joy, and peace. This cherished time offers a moment to pause, reflect on the year that has passed, and embrace the possibilities of a fresh, promising beginning.

At the heart of this celebration lies Gói Tết and Trao Xuân, two intertwined concepts that embody the essence of Tết. Gói Tết, or “Tết Bundle,” can be seen in multiple ways. It represents the thoughtful gift packages prepared for close friends and family, filled with best wishes for the new year. It also symbolizes the act of wrapping up the old—letting go of the past to make space for the new. Beyond these, Gói Tết captures the series of activities that prepare us for Tết, getting ready for a fresh start.

Meanwhile, Trao Xuân, or “Sharing Spring Blessings,” highlights the act of offering heartfelt wishes for a joyful and peaceful year ahead. It transforms gift-giving into a meaningful expression of connection and goodwill. Together, Gói Tết, trao Xuân creates a harmonious narrative of gathering and giving, celebrating Tết as a season of abundance, renewal, and shared prosperity.

The design draws inspiration from the concepts of Gói Tết, trao Xuân, reflecting the heartfelt rituals of preparing for Tết while blending Vietnamese and Japanese traditions into a cohesive narrative of connection and cultural harmony.

The visuals begin with the family tradition of making bánh chưng, symbolizing unity and the warmth of shared effort. This transitions to the vibrant act of buying mai (apricot blossoms), representing renewal and hope for the new year. The inclusion of Furoshiki wrapping adds a mindful and sustainable touch, transforming gift-giving into an intentional gesture of care. Finally, Maneki-neko bridges the two cultures, serving as a shared symbol of luck and prosperity. Together, these elements capture the spirit of Tết as a celebration of tradition and generosity while honoring the beauty of cultural exchange.

This year’s Tết design embraces Furoshiki as the ideal wrapping material, seamlessly aligning with the holiday’s traditions and design philosophy. This Japanese wrapping cloth symbolizes thoughtfulness and sustainability, turning packaging into a meaningful part of the gift. Wrapping with Furoshiki is more than a practical step—it is an expression of care and intention that enriches the exchange, echoing the spirit of Tết and its emphasis on thoughtful traditions.

Furoshiki’s reusable nature offers a sustainable alternative to disposable materials, ensuring recipients can repurpose it for wrapping parcels or bottles, making it a functional keepsake rather than waste. Its durability adds value, enabling repeated use and extending the gift’s impact beyond the initial exchange. As a cornerstone of this year’s Tết design, Furoshiki embodies simplicity and connection, transforming packaging into a reflection of tradition and mindfulness.

By blending cultural heritage with sustainability, Furoshiki reimagines gift wrapping, ensuring every gift carries a lasting message of care, unity, and environmental responsibility. Its integration into this year’s Tết design encapsulates the essence of the holiday: a celebration of thoughtful traditions, shared prosperity, and the enduring beauty of cultural exchange.
