The project deals with student Gabriella Prussak’s TCC for her Design degree, presented and approved in 2023. The main objective of the work chosen by the student was to develop a new graphic project for the packaging of the vinyl album “Remain in Light” by the band Talking Heads, as a prototype of a special edition of the album, which represented more of the creativity and boldness of the album’s musical concept and which had in its composition collectible materials for the music-loving public, record collectors and fans of the band in particular. Here the idea was also to explore the student’s areas of interest in the field of design, such as: Packaging design, Prints and printing processes (such as the risography used in the poster created) and Design focused on musical projects.
The project proposal was to create a packaging prototype that represented the creativity and boldness of the album’s musical concept, that had in its composition collectible materials for the music-loving public in addition to just the cover and that mainly was a visual experience for the collector, as if he could enter and interact with the world of music through the packaging. One of the ideas was to explore non-conventional printing techniques such as risography, bring references from this process to the construction of the redesign of the album’s visual identity and manually build a full-size prototype of the album’s entire packaging. The main idea was to make the entire packaging of a record as desirable as the record itself and make it a visual extension of the musical work, bringing back the importance of creating more graphic projects designed for this format. For this project, the band Talking Heads was chosen due to the eccentricity of the band and the chosen album, which is known for being an innovation in the field of music due to its use of polyrhythms and overlapping of voices and sounds, becoming a great musical collage. . The author’s greatest desire was for the entire construction of the packaging to be done manually, except for printing, and in the end this could be completed, all packaging was designed, cut, assembled and glued by the author, including additional materials such as videos, photos and motions of the project.
