Church Road 120 Years
In 2018, Church Road Winery reached a remarkable milestone: its 120th anniversary. To celebrate, we created a limited-edition bottle wrap that encapsulates the winery’s unique history and the legacy of a true pioneer in New Zealand’s wine industry.
Over the course of 120 years, countless stories have unfolded within the walls of Church Road Winery. At the heart of these stories is Tom McDonald, often honoured as the father of French-inspired winemaking in New Zealand. Tom’s ambitious vision and entrepreneurial drive were instrumental in transforming the original winery, founded in 1897, into a beacon of innovation. His efforts not only established the reputation of Church Road but also helped to elevate New Zealand wine to international acclaim. Today, we commemorate his contribution by celebrating 120 years of heritage, passion, and craftsmanship.
The limited-edition bottle wrap presents a visual journey through Tom’s extraordinary life and the many milestones achieved at Church Road. For this special design, five carefully chosen images were selected to capture brief yet meaningful moments from the past. Each image portrays a story that reflects the enduring spirit of Church Road, showcased across five varietals within the McDonald Series. This series serves as a tribute to Tom McDonald’s remarkable legacy, honouring his life’s work and dedication to the art of winemaking.
Each wine in the McDonald Series has been crafted to embody the spirit of Church Road’s journey—a journey that honours tradition while embracing innovation. Through these wines, we invite enthusiasts and newcomers alike to experience the depth of history, heritage, and the exceptional quality that defines Church Road Winery.
