Munkácsy 180 Identity Celebrating the Legacy of a Master Painter

Munkácsy 180 Identity Celebrating the Legacy of a Master Painter

The Munkácsy Negyed (ie. Munkácsy Quarter) is a diverse cultural and artistic experience site in the heart of Békéscsaba, inspired by the legacy of the world-famous painter Mihály Munkácsy. The district is made up of the Mihály Munkácsy Museum, which has the largest Munkácsy collection, the Munkácsy Memorial House, the Napsugár Puppet Theatre, the Békés County Library and the Csabagyöngye Cultural Center.

The commemorative year celebrating the 180th anniversary of the painter’s birth focuses on the person of Munkácsy, as a symbol of perseverance and self-made progress. The portrait includes several characters typical of the artist’s painting, such as Munkácsy’s way of realistic art and the play of light and shadow. Highlighting the festive year, the primary color palette is a combination of gold and black.

The logo concept of the Munkácsy Quarter is based on the initials of the painter’s signature. The curves of the letter “M” not only refer to Mihály Munkácsy’s creative drive, but also bring Mihály Munkácsy as a person closer to those who see the Quarter’s logo. The shape of the letter gives us the opportunity to associate, in addition to the personality itself, an abstract meaning, the line of a cultural road that can be walked in the Quarter, the image of a tourist route, where we can see the beginning at the starting point of the “M” and the end goal at the end. In addition to all these, the lines of the letter “M” resemble the so-called Élővíz canal that crosses Békéscsaba and the Quarter.

The visual language used for the identity highlights and abstracts the textures and geometric shapes of the Munkácsy Quarter and the institutions belonging to it into a set of graphic elements that can be used independently or freely combined. The communication remains self-identical and compatible with the characteristics of the Quarter, yet it appears in a contemporary, fresh, elegant and playful form.
