Little Chocolate Wonderland

Nestled in the city of Malmö is an old chocolate factory with a bricked and striped chimney that reaches towards the skies. This century-old factory marks the beginning of Swedish chocolate history in 1888. After years of silence from its machinery, two chocolate-loving brothers reached out to us for help to breathe new life into it and to once again fill the nearby alleys with the aroma of roasted cocoa beans. It was in 2015, and the Malmö Chocolate Factory brand was reborn. So was a new chocolaty narrative, one defined by dreamy, organic, handmade, curious, and creative confectionaries.

A new chapter was to unfold when the brand got a chance to open their first flagship store and create a little wonderland full of character in Malmö’s historic and dreamlike Savoy Hotel building. We immediately wanted to enhance all the characteristics embedded in the enchanting narrative. To turn this into an experience where grown-ups can become kids once again, we designed a floor-to-ceiling chocolate wonderland, infusing the brand’s story, vibrant personality, and key assets into every corner.

Going from the graphic design into spatiality, our brand assets came to life, and a whole new world revealed itself. Our iconic stripes in brown and blue got enlarged. Like chocolate and ice cream, proudly carrying their heritage into this new future. Chocolate textures, made tactile, from melted tempering to ready chocolate cake. Hot and cold. Swirly and squared. Hard and soft. Warm wood and rough brass. The interiors turned into an experience for all senses, adding a new dimension to the brand.

In the spirit of a wonderland, we had fun challenging shapes and proportions. An oversized chocolate cake is displayed in the window. An enlarged cake stand with a small one on top as a focal point in the store. Filled with treats making it hard to resist to pick a piece from it. Curvy display shelves create a smooth flow throughout the interior, presenting the full range of flavours, turning each piece of chocolate into a work of art. A chocolaty marble counter desk, showcasing luxurious pralines. The experience is heightened by tantalizing tasting bowls and an enticing selection of merchandise. Outside, a blue door, blue window niches, and striped awnings together with a Parisian café setting hints passers-by of the little chocolate wonderland that awaits inside.

It all turned into a sweet space, made with the flair and charm of the brand. And it’s just as successful as we imagined in our chocolaty fantasy! Walk in and you’ll walk out with your thoughts and pockets full of sweet dreams and treats.
