Verily. Truly, Honestly, Wholesome Food Sauces

When Karlene Karst discovered the power of food, she set out on a journey to share her expertise with the world, and it listened. Having become a celebrated nutritionist and cookbook author, Goop panel speaker and a mom of three, she showed that wholesome can be easy. Yet when she looked for quick & easy solutions in the store, she could rarely find something that would offer the nutrition our bodies craved outside the produce aisle. That’s how the idea for ready-to-cook food sauces that would be tasty and wholesome was born.

Working with Karlene, Vancouver-based design studio, Glasfurd & Walker created a positioning that was inspired by Karlene’s style of cooking, with a simple and powerful brand idea at its heart – The Easy Way To Wholesome. The name Verily was chosen for its beautiful phonetics as well as archaic meaning – to say something “truly; certainly.” It found another expression in the brand tagline: “Truly. Honestly. Wholesome”.

The logo word marque is inspired by the unfurling green shoots of plants and a supporting flower logo communicates the plant-based nature of the products as well as the beauty of living a healthy life.

The packaging form required some consideration. Whether pasta, rice or salad – all sauces in the supermarket are ambient and come in glass. Karlene wanted to convey that this was a different kind of sauce – without preservatives, cold processed and pure, so she picked a pouch that protected nutritious ingredients from UV lights, yet didn’t feel too precious and was effortless to use and recyclable.

The bold simple photography looks beautiful while capturing the product texture & colour, an important detail for a non-see-through pouch. The fork is loaded with pasta, a serving suggestion that evokes a sense of family fun, making it memorable – a nod to the energy of the Karlene’s style of cooking and her love of dancing in the kitchen. A playful and iconic approach to the design – graphic in nature.

A simple yet elegant identity that mixes wholesomeness with a dash of gourmet and a healthy dose of fun.
