Inspired by the story of Moby Dick I designed this custom glass bottle and matching label for the fictitious brand of “Whalers” rum. The idea was to convey a sense of luxury. The shape of the bottle was inspired by the curved “bulky” head of a sperm whale as used in the original illustrations in the book from 1851 by Herman Melville. For the label I decided to stay close to the nautical theme but at the same time deliberately steered clear of traditional techniques such as engraving or etching which would give the label a typical, more classical look. Using a modern minimalist approach to the illustration using geometrical shapes and limited colour pallet combined with high end finishes such as embossing and gold foil give the final product a contemporary and luxurious feel. In the end the bottle is presented in it’s custom made linen covered gift box. Two basic halves are separated by a slightly larger inner box separating the main parts of the box. This way it should be clear how the box must be opened to whoever receives it. The box itself is covered with linnen cloth finished in two different colours referring to the label on the actual bottle. An embossed version of the label is added to the front of the box and text elements run along the white edge that separates the two main parts of the packaging using gold foil. The bottle itself is nested within a block of black foam to hold it firmly in place. This way you surely receive a bespoke present, even if you just buy the bottle for yourself.
