Packaging Design Creation for Le Creux Mahié

Packaging Design Creation for Le Creux Mahié

Le Creux Mahié, a dry gin made in the unique island of Guernsey.

The concept is drawn from the history of Guernsey. The island, once a bustling seaport, crucial to maritime trade. It’s named after a large cave on the southern shore of the island, with it’s own unique history.

The label, which features a print from one of the oldest maps on which the cave is shown, is a compliment to local map makers who took the time to chart local waters. It is made from rough handmade paper akin to that utilised in nautical charts.

The serif typeface echoes the 19th century, when the cave was used by smugglers, privateers, voyagers and pirates alike. The cave was large enough to hide entire ships from Her Majesty’s Naval Fleet and the smuggler’s main line of business was the export and import of alcoholic drinks.

A unique bottle shape has been developed for this concept. An enhanced feeling in the hand is engendered by the bottle utilising a dashed track swirling around its edges inspired by those used by cartographers. The base of the bottle is wrapped with hemp rope which was commonly deployed on ships right up to the 19th Century before modern alternatives took its place.

A wooden globe encases the bottle, synonymous with travellers (peregrinators!) around the world as a universal symbol that the world is far larger than we realise and a reminder that we really can have the world in the palm of our hand.

Wrapping around the top half of the globe we have our primary label, an outline on either side presents our symbol, the anchor, one of many features harking back to Guernsey’s long and vibrant nautical history. We have handwritten details on the label of this diminutive-batch gin which generates a sense of added exclusivity.

Among other diminutive features that inspire the consumer to travel throughout the world, we have developed a Guernsey-led voyager’s Gin inspiring the consumer to go out, explore and travel the world just like our forebears who discovered our fair island of Guernsey. À la perchôine.
