In the past, Textile-based art was not regarded as art under the artificial distinction between fine art and textiles. Because of their associations with domesticity and femininity, textiles have always struggled as a medium for art.

Fiber is Alphabet: Beyond Craft, Becoming Art is a hypothetical exhibition featuring artists who interpreted textiles and fiber with their unique idea and expanded the traditional notion of textile art. This exhibition explores how textile and fiber media have been redefined into a new way of art beyond tradition, stereotypes, and practical usage.

This exhibition presents six artists who have made significant contributions to this change: Anni Albers, a weaver who helped describe pictorial textile art; Faith Ringgold, a feminist artist who worked with a mixture of painted and quilted fabrics; Sheila Hicks, an artist whose woven and textile works blurred the line between painting and sculpture; Francoise Grossen, an artist who broke away from the wall and rejected traditional approaches to textile-based work; Judith Scott, sculptural fiber works binding a variety of disparate materials; Nick Cave, exploring diverse textiles and fibers to obscures race, gender, and class. All of these artists expanded textiles and fibers in new ways, addressing the social and intellectual ramifications of their use, and paving the way for future generations of textile and fiber artists.

As a designer, I developed an identity and visual language connected to the theme of the exhibition. I thought about how to make different artists look for one group with the same concept. The design of the exhibition and catalog re-imagined the traditional weaving mechanism into a visual voice. The vertically stacked graphic shapes mimic how the loom moves and interweaves the thread. Based on the system, layouts of book are playing out this idea of weaving. Each paragraph and images move like a loom and are woven together. For the book binding method, I choose a sewn-bound book that gives a tangible sense relevant to the exhibition theme.
