Juke Typeface by Student Polina Larina

Juke Typeface by Student Polina Larina

The modular font “Juke” is composed of simple shapes, yet has a unique rhythm and texture that is reminiscent of music in nature.

Swing is the best term to describe this font. It means rhythm and vibrations. Rhythm is perhaps the main characteristic of the Juke typeface. It is thanks to the large amplitudes of heights, the accent shape of the circle in contrast to the graceful thin lines that the Juke typeface is so unique.

This accent font unwittingly refers to the “jazz era”, many can see a retrospective perception of the art deco style. However, the creation of the Juke did not carry a copy of the well-known elements, but rather a rethinking of the 20-30s vibe.

Juke, due to its rhythm and emerging associations, is ideal for decorating music covers, especially jazz ones. Therefore, I chose jazz records as carriers. They also show how it can be combined with a typesetting grotesque typeface.

Ligatures add additional intensity in playing with rhythm. This game allows you to create interesting compositions by collecting letters like puzzles. However, the font looks good in the set, and it turns out to be a very interesting uneven texture. Though it will take longer to read it than to read typesetting fonts. Such a font, of course, is not suitable for some kind of functional information, but the lead it typed is acceptable to the eye. Despite the uniformity, it does not dazzle in the eyes.

In the future, I plan to develop this font: expand the cash register of the Latin alphabet, add numbers to the set, and so on.
