The adaptation of a bomb damaged chapel in the heart of Peckham, London. Converting the site into a community theatre space with an emphasis on educating and supporting young creatives. The site is located within a 10 minute walk from the bustling high-street.
I designed the space with four key design moves in mind; creating a sophisticated performance space to enable excitement, drama and hope for the local community in Peckham. secondly, creating a space to fulfil the demands of the client; David Glass, an empathetic and ambitious theatre practitioner. Which in turn, encourages education and inspiration. Thirdly, creating an accessible and inclusive space for both the performers and public. And finally, a space which is sustainable both economically and environmentally.
The scheme takes references from Robert Venturi and Eric Owen Moss, along with constructivist architectural details. The imposed cylindrical structure disrupts the traditional rectangular symmetry of the space whilst leaves space for the existing architecture to tell its story.
Key materials used within the scheme include; mirror finish stainless steel, to firstly mirror the unique existing interior, and secondly to add drama to the space as you are confronted with your reflection. Another key material is pale timber, used for its durable, load bearing and sustainable qualities. Wool Woodwall for its acoustic properties.
I love experimenting with materials and getting involved and immersed in the workshop, creating screen prints, plaster casts, and 3D printed models. I have referenced the richly damaged, yet beautiful interior walls and subtly reflected the buildings past with textured plaster to make that crucial and relevant link between the old and the new; a vital factor an interior designer must tackle and confront.
I feel I have designed an ambitious and empathetic scheme which meets the needs of the client and my main intentions as a designer.
