Branding for Jimis Kombucha Created by José Liranzo Guillén

Jimis kombucha is a queer owned local kombucha brand based in Dominican Republic established in 2021, the mission of Jimis kombucha brand is to make kombucha fun, accesible and most importantly inclusive.

The graphics were inspired by Asian and Dominican culture, artwork taking inspiration from famous Dominican Artist Candido Bido, taking his signature art characteristics you can see this reflected in the brands character Jimi, a gender non conforming kid that has big lemon shaped eyes, a rounded shape face and full lips just like (Candido Bidos art characters) but giving this aesthetic a Japanese anime feeling that has afro – latino roots ( reflected in jimis afro – latino ethnicity features such as the afro spacebuns and full lips) all of these little details were essential for making the brand feel more authentic and rooted in Dominican culture, I wanted to honour my culture while taking inspiration for Japanese culture in a respectful way. Kombucha originated in China but it became popular in Japan, something similar to what Jimis kombucha wants to achieve but with Dominican Republic. The logo is inspired in a Japanese hanko (Japanese stamp) representing personal identity, beauty in imperfections, being rustic and giving the brand a seal of quality.

Overall I still wanted the brand to have an organic feeling to reflect how rustic and homemade the kombucha is, for that playing with natural textures such as the organic paper in the background to the brushlike stroke fonts used were key to achieving this goal. By taking inspiration on how Japanese is traditionally written vertically I wanted to play with the composition of the words by tilting them vertically this helped in giving the brand an more “asian” feeling to it.
