Play Brew Co is a UK-based craft beer brand hell-bent on producing exhilarating beer with a nostalgic twist, born from the influential culture of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Alphabet worked with Play Brew Co on creating their second special release beer which was inspired by the vintage feel of Original Cherry Cola.

As one of Play’s most experimental brews, they decided to have a cheeky bit of fun and created this mouthwatering Cherry Cola Ale for a little throwback to an all time classic soft drink! For this special release, Alphabet created a unique layout, playful character iconography and a vintage inspired Cola style 70’s typeface to help the product really pack a punch on the shelves.

Alphabet worked on a limited but bold colour scheme for this release with a bright red background and stone white details for the flavour title. This was paired with a black keyline layout system to help the identity stand out across print and digital touchpoints which included playful sticker devices for extra stand out quality. The font of the can features a playful double-cherry character as an icon and brand signifier for the Play Brew Co identity as well as smaller typographic lock-ups that make the label design feel structured, yet unique.

The photoshoot was shot under bright lighting using lots of ice as the backdrop with water droplets on the product itself in order to bring a mouthwatering visual appeal to the product whilst simultaneously poking fun at the vintage style popular Cola brand adverts.

The name of the product ‘Cherry Bomb’ takes inspiration from the 1976 classic anthem by ‘The Runaways’ which ties the product naming in with the overall visual theme of the can design, as well as the flavour combinations and the overarching 70’s era theme which is a big influence to the Play Brew Co brand.

We can all agree that this mouthwatering playful and bold design is really unique and will be sure to really stand out on the shelves amongst in the heavily populated world of Craft Beer.
