Spytail Rum was looking to redesign the label and the overall brand look to capture France’s rich history of explorers. Charmoine Choi called upon the illustrative talents of Steven Noble to create these unique illustrations to help enrich the brand in this woodcut etched style. The Charente River which is featured in Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea flows past the Spytail distillery.
Bigger and Leith , who owns a small portfolio of fine spirits from established, family-owned distilleries, commissioned Steven Noble to create some unique illustrations for their new labels called Spytail Rum. Spytail is named after a legendary submarine – plans for which were discovered by their distillers. The first mechanical submarines in the world were invented in France – and tested on the Charente River which flows nearby our distillery. These were the submarines which Jules Vernes used as the inspiration for his famous novel – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and which inspired these illustrations.
