The project was to design a Corporate Logomark as the first of three components that will make up the overall semester project. Once the logo is designed students will create subsidiary logos and brand extensions. Students will also create the Branding Guidelines and Brand Elements component — all of these components combined will give you a branded campaign.
Overview
The best solution to a problem comes from within the problem itself. Yet the most important part of the design problem—research—often receives the least amount of attention. The designer must thoroughly understand the company, or organization, its product or service and its position in the market, before he or she can effectively create a symbol to represent that company or organization.
The Project
Choose and name a large corporation with an identifiable consumer base (which is NOT young adults, ages 19 through 25—In other words, you will not be marketing exclusively to yourselves. Your market must be broader, the company needs to be large enough to have a need for a branding guide – a small boutique or coffee shop would most likely not need a branding guide). You may look to an existing company as a model, but your logo will be for a hypothetical organization.
Naming
Choose the name carefully, relate it as well as possible to describing the product or service, without being dull. It should reflect the corporate attitude/culture of the company.
Design
The most effective logos represent a gestalt—the whole is different from and greater than the sum total of the individual parts. Some general principles apply to logo design:
it must communicate clearly and quickly
it must be “readable” at very small sizes (1/2″ diameter)
it must work in one color
Subsidiary logos
You will be creating subsidiary logos for the company. This will not be due until the final project is done. We will focus on subsidiary logos during the Stationery Design component of this project.
The following submissions include the coprorate logo, subsidiary logos, and brand extensions in the way of packaging and interactive.
