Visual Identity and Label Design for Palinka a Traditional Hungarian Spirit

Palinka a little inspiration – remedy. Visual identity and label design made for a traditional Hungarian hand-crafted fruit spirit called Palinka.
This drink might be one of the most famous Hungarian specialties, which is a traditional type of distilled fruit brandy, invented in the Middle Ages, perfected over centuries of well-worn tradition.

The concept of the project was to create an eye-catching, but simple, clean and unique visual narrative, representing the essence of the spirit palinka. The graphic elements are minimalist, and abstract, geometric representations of fruits, used in creating this strongly aromatic drink: peach/ pear/ plum/ grapes/ sour cherry.

The spirit encapsulates the connection to nature, through a contemporary and clean design. The pattern changes on each bottle – each flavor has its own pattern, illustrating the fruit/ fruits it was made of.

As long as the palinka bottle is full, the pattern on its back side creates an optical illusion. The shape of the bottle is similar to a pharmacy glass, because of the legendary benefits of palinka. In Hungarian culture it is often called medicine or remedy (only in small quantities). The Hungarian language has many folk and humorous names/ labels for this drink, like “elixir” or “the water of life”. It is also called as a “little inspiration”, because it has a mood-enhancing impact at social parties and pleasant family events, if consumed in moderation.
The bottle is available in one size – 500 ML.

The collection is available in a limited series and made for an amateur palinka-maker as a label for his own home-made batch. The drink is hand-crafted to an original secret recipe, made with fruits freshly picked from the garden, making it unique and original, telling a compelling story with a multi-generational connection.

The design creates a unique drink experience and visual narrative, because palinka is more than the drink itself: it conveys a mood and tradition too. It contains inside all the vital sunlight, the careful manual work, the taste of the wooden barrels, the flavors of fruits and the heart and spirit of the palinka maker.
