Glasgow is once again the stage for another international event. This time the city is the home of Indoor Athletics.
In September 2023, I joined the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 as an independent design contractor. Working closely with Glasgow Life and World Athletics, I developed a series of illustrations to be showcased on the look of the event and city dressing. The assets were used on digital campaigns, city dressing, Out of Home, competition venue, ticketing, social media, posters, programme covers and other marketing channels.
I developed four poses for the individual disciplines of High Jump, Running, Pole Vault and Shot Putt), five Glasgow landmarks representing the Duke of Wellington Statue (famous for the traffic cone on its head), the Armadillo, the Glasgow City Chambers, the Clyde Arc bridge and the Commonwealth Arena.
The set of illustrative assets worked individually but also combined in six different master compositions. These illustrations varied depending on the prevalence of male or female hero athletes and skin colours. It made the identity diverse and inclusive representing all by gender and race.
The look was inspired by and explored a range of different themes and references including the tartan, the Scottish Saltire flag, geometry and superhero poses. The result was a creative and vibrant identity that celebrated the sport and Glasgow and Scotland’s culture.
