The clicking of scissors, the rustling of razors, the buzzing of electric machines is the everyday life of a modern barbershop. Men are given freedom of choice and professionals will gladly choose a haircut that will emphasize their uniqueness. However, such a liberal attitude towards men’s hairstyles has been formed recently. According to Russian traditions, a hairstyle is an important element of the appearance of any member of the stronger sex. Hair care was approached very carefully, and the choice of haircuts was very limited. But over time, the hairstyles themselves and the attitude towards them changed. It is no secret that they were influenced not only by world fashion, but also by religion, art and historical events. Changes in the world were followed by changes in appearance. In this visual study, I picked up examples of hairstyles from different eras, with their help we will see what changes men’s haircuts have undergone from Ancient Russia to the present day.

Visual research about the evolution of men’s hairstyles. One of the publications that is offered to visitors on a coffee table in a good barbershop. Magazine format is 200×260 mm, 136 pages. The edition divided into sections. Each of them has specific color. This way, headings, quotes and photos have the same color in section. Photos are color-coded, except for the haircuts. By the way, magazine has spreads not included in the overall narrative. I talk about barbers and fashion there. These spreads stand out for their special layout, alignment by format, antique font and monochrome palette. This project was carried out as a student project at the HSE School of Art and Design in 2022, curated by Evgeny Kashirin.
