Translating the Idea of Made From Scratch Into Design and Experience for a Neighbourhood Cafe

Translating the Idea of Made From Scratch Into Design and Experience for a Neighbourhood Cafe

Handmade Café in Pune was conceived as a neighbourhood space designed for time spent. In a category where cafés are often built either for quick consumption or visual appeal, there are few environments that balance comfort, quality, and engagement for families. Parents frequently struggle to find spaces where they can relax while their children remain meaningfully engaged without relying on screens.

The project set out to address this gap by creating a community-led café rooted in everyday use. Rare Ideas worked with the founders to translate this intent into a cohesive brand and experience system built around a single idea: made-from-scratch.

Traditionally associated with food preparation, made-from-scratch was treated here as a broader standard. It informed not only what is served, but how the café operates, how it includes children, and how the space is designed. The guiding principle was simple — make care visible.

This thinking shaped the design language. The identity draws from block-printing and clay-based craft traditions, resulting in a stamp-like mark with soft edges and subtle irregularities. The broader visual system is built around organic forms stacked in balance, with textured surfaces that reference relief printing. These elements signal tactility, human involvement, and a sense of process.

A restrained palette of natural tones reinforces this approach. Browns provide grounding and material connection, while white introduces clarity and space. Muted accents are used sparingly to maintain warmth without creating visual noise. Together, these elements create an environment that feels calm, approachable, and consistent with the café’s intended rhythm.

The idea of made-from-scratch extends beyond visuals into the guest experience. Small, functional touchpoints were treated as opportunities to activate the brand. Coasters, shaped like slices of bread, were designed as surfaces that guests could draw on. What began as a simple intervention evolved into a participatory layer within the space. Over time, these drawings were collected, forming a wall of guest-created moments.

This approach reflects a broader belief that brand experiences are often shaped through details that are typically overlooked. By embedding the core idea into both design and interaction, Handmade creates an environment where the brand is not only seen, but actively experienced.

The result is a neighbourhood café that supports longer dwell time, encourages repeat visits, and builds familiarity over time. Handmade demonstrates how a clear idea, when consistently applied, can shape behaviour and create a more meaningful connection between space and user.
