Kintsugi is a japanese ceramic restoration technique. Broken dishes are glued back together, but the cracks are not masked. On the contrary, each of them is emphasized, fastening the fragments with urushi lacquer with the addition of precious metal — gold or other noble materials. Kintsugi means “golden joinery” in Japanese. (Sometimes the process is called kintsukuroi, which means “golden repair.”)

The collection of kintsugi pottery «Marumado» (丸窓, japanese traditional round window) is presented by School of kintsugi art «Kanpeki» in Russia. In this project you can see the kintsugi ceramic objects created by kintsugi masters. Objects can be sold afterwards in the presented packaging.

Marumado is a window to the soul. Looking through the marumado, we look at the world: extraordinary, imperfect, refracted by rays of light. Inspired by this idea, we created a collection of ceramics using the kintsugi technique. Looking at the ceramic object in the package as through a marumado, we try to see it, but due to the reflective rays of light we see only its fuzzy outline with golden lines and multi-colored glass inserts. There is a distortion of the perception of space and time. We begin to look for beauty in the imperfect, unfinished and fickle. The «Marumado collection» is about pacification, peace and harmony.

School of kintsugi art Kanpeki is the first creative educational future space in Russia based on the philosophy of kintsugi. On the territory of the school you can visit master classes on the restoration of ceramics, historical lectures and seminars on the application of philosophy to life, meet kintsugi masters and much more. In other words, there is a complete immersion in a specific branch of Japanese art.

The mission is to familiarize people with the philosophy of kintsugi, so that, in addition to knowing about an unusual method of restoration, to help them cope with their problems, to learn the principles of philosophy and simple rituals that play the role of «healthy nutrition» for the mind, soul and body.
