Table Stories – Packaging Design for Hardanger Bestikk

Table Stories Unfolded: The dining table is the heart of every home, where meals are shared and stories find their voice. Since 1958, Hardanger Bestikk has adorned Norwegian tables, becoming an integral part of family narratives. With each table setting, a new chapter unfolds, and a fresh story is penned.

Crafting Unique Narratives: Every series from Hardanger Bestikk tells its distinct tale, a story we wanted to share. We envisioned each product line as a coffee table book, a “Table Story” that embellishes the dining table and communicates the history behind the cutlery and the company. A decorative piece suitable for any occasion, ready to be placed on the shelf when not in use.

Coherent Packaging System: We meticulously developed a packaging system that forms a clear identity. Minimalist black boxes with tactile surfaces and white text create a cohesive and organised expression across all product lines. A standardised size system was established, considering the optimal way to present the cutlery and reflecting the core idea of packaging as a book. Each product type stands beautifully on its own, harmoniously as part of a cutlery series, and collectively as an overarching packaging concept. The aim is to encourage people to cherish Hardanger Bestikk products as collectables, items to be inherited or given as gifts. Thus, the packaging catalyses this sentiment.

Visual Composition: Still images, styling, text, and defined colours are carefully composed for each series, reflecting the identity and uniqueness of the cutlery while emphasising aesthetic and functional qualities. This contributes to telling a brief story about each series, differentiating them from one another.

Each cutlery series is named after a strong woman. The characteristics of the cutlery are then conveyed through the personality they share.

Enhancing the Consumer Experience: Every element in the packaging contributes to a delightful experience for the consumer—from unpacking to table setting and storage after use. The philosophy behind this integrated and thought-out packaging concept is to encourage packaging preservation as part of functionality, sustainability, and upcycling.

Table Stories transforms dining tables and weaves a narrative of craftsmanship, sustainability, and storytelling through the thoughtful design of Hardanger Bestikk’s packaging.
