“The Mystic Eye – Interactive Intervention” is an artistic reinterpretation of Alex Grey’s iconic work, blending traditional techniques and emerging technologies to offer an immersive sensory experience. The project transforms a deeply symbolic and spiritual visual piece into a multimedia installation that invites the viewer to activate and co-create the artwork through their presence.
This project was originally developed as part of a university program focused on the intersection of art, technology, and sensory design, highlighting the creative potential of emerging artists working in collaborative and interdisciplinary contexts.
The installation uses proximity sensors and sound-reactive programming, allowing environmental stimuli (such as voice or touch) to generate real-time visual and auditory responses. This interaction was developed using Arduino, enabling a direct dialogue between the viewer and the piece. Through light patterns, sound textures, and motion, the installation evokes altered states of perception that align with the mystical and spiritual symbolism of the original artwork.
Beyond technology, the project incorporates a rich material and aesthetic exploration. The piece has been manually intervened using techniques such as painting, textiles, 3D printing, and engraving, resulting in a hybrid work that balances craft with digital innovation. This fusion reinforces the concept of duality between the physical and the intangible, the human and the technological, the emotional and the rational.
A key component of the project is the videomapping with custom animation, projected directly onto the artwork to expand its visual narrative. The animations are specifically designed to dialogue with Alex Grey’s forms and symbols, and they synchronize with environmental stimuli to create a fully immersive experience that transcends the visual.
Together, these elements seek to question and expand the limits of perception, inviting the viewer on an introspective journey where art, science, and spirituality converge on a shared plane of expanded reality. The audience becomes not just an oberver but a vital participant in the activation on the piece, experiencing a state of presence, reflection, and deep connection. Ultimately, the project encourages a reimagining of how consciousness interacts with the sensory world through art.
