Student Regina Render Designs Raymond Templier as a Modular Art Deco Type and Exhibition Experience

Student Regina Render Designs Raymond Templier as a Modular Art Deco Type and Exhibition Experience

This project combines the development of a decorative type system and the design of an exhibition space, inspired by the jewelry legacy of Raymond Templier. It explores how the principles of Art Deco can be translated into a contemporary visual language that operates across typography and exhibition design without turning the space itself into a purely typographic construction.

As part of the project, two related typefaces were created. The first is a simpler, more restrained base font intended for body text, captions, and informational materials. The second is a more complex decorative version with additional graphic elements and details, designed for headings, accent phrases, and large-scale visual emphasis. These two styles are conceived as a pair, allowing the system to shift between clarity and expressiveness depending on context.

The foundation of both typefaces is inspired by typography of the Art Deco era. Geometric construction, clear proportions, contrast, and a strong linear rhythm serve as the starting point for the design. Rather than directly replicating historical fonts, these features are reinterpreted through a contemporary, modular approach based on circles, straight lines, and controlled intersections. This approach echoes Templier’s architectural understanding of jewelry, where form was treated as a constructed object with internal logic and balance. The letterforms follow the same principle, emphasizing structure, precision, and compositional tension.

The exhibition space is developed as a setting for presenting this typographic system and the jewelry context behind it. Typography plays a key role in navigation, captions, and visual emphasis, while the space itself remains a neutral framework for display. Through this combination, the project connects type design and exhibition design as complementary disciplines, rethinking Art Deco heritage through a contemporary design lens.
