Student Packaging Design Concept for Zoo Grain Mixtures by Natasha Spitsyna

Student Packaging Design Concept for Zoo Grain Mixtures by Natasha Spitsyna

My task was to develop a packaging design based on an interjection from the Russian language.

For the packaging design I chose the interjection ‘kurlyk’ – “курлык” – a sound imitation of the voice of pigeons, cranes and other birds in Russian. This packaging is supposed to be sold to visitors to the Moscow Zoo so that they can feed the birds. There are various feeds available, such as millet, grain mix or dried rowanberries. You can choose any food for the birds you plan to feed. This way, visitors will be feeding the birds with the right, healthy food and not unhealthy bread.

There were no specific references in the visual framework, the only thing I relied on at the beginning was the images of pigeons and cranes, because these are the first birds we think of when we hear ‘kurlyk’ – “курлык”.

In my work, it was important for me to convey the dynamics of this sound. At first I tried to create the effect of vibration through the letters themselves, but during sketching I remembered about the schematic representation of the sound wave and decided to use this technique on the whole word.

On paper, it was immediately apparent that the word not only resembled the sound, but also resembled the shape of a flock of flying birds.

The bird in the letter K was also born out of chaotic sketching. In the process of lettering, at some point the letter split into two component parts, and at a certain tilt it became extremely similar to a real bird in a flock.
