Student Krasilnikova Elizaveta Designs a Dramatic Display Typeface for the John Galliano Exhibition

Task
The objective of this project is to design a unique display typeface and apply it to the creation of a visual identity for an exhibition dedicated to the work of fashion designer John Galliano. The font should not exist as an isolated graphic element, but function as a core expressive tool that reflects the designer’s philosophy, aesthetics, and emotional intensity. Through typography, the exhibition identity must communicate drama, narrative depth, and a strong visual presence that immediately immerses the viewer in Galliano’s world.

Designer
John Galliano is one of the most influential and provocative fashion designers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He is widely recognized for his theatrical approach to fashion, his bold storytelling, and his ability to transform runway shows into fully staged performances. Galliano’s work often blurs the boundaries between fashion, theater, history, and fantasy. His collections are rich with references, emotional tension, and visual excess, making each show an unforgettable spectacle rather than a simple presentation of clothing.

Uniqueness
What makes Galliano’s work truly distinctive is his commitment to narrative. Each of his shows tells a story, often inspired by historical periods, fictional characters, or dramatic cultural references. The models do not merely present garments; they become characters with individual identities, emotions, and roles within a larger storyline. Galliano places great value on contrast and tension. He frequently combines luxurious, richly textured fabrics with rough, distressed, or deliberately imperfect elements. This contrast can be seen in the coexistence of perfect tailoring and raw, torn edges, as well as in the fusion of classical silhouettes with unconventional, unexpected details. These opposing qualities create a sense of controlled chaos that defines his aesthetic.

Font Requirements
The display font designed for this exhibition must visually translate these ideas into typographic form. It should appear dramatic, layered, and slightly chaotic, reflecting the emotional intensity of Galliano’s work. While the overall impression may feel disordered or fragmented, the letterforms must remain precise and intentional, suggesting overlapping elements and complex construction. The typography should evoke theatricality and tension, balancing elegance with disruption. Ultimately, the font should embody a sense of drama and visual storytelling, capturing the spirit of John Galliano and serving as a powerful foundation for the exhibition’s identity.
