Student Caitlin Choo Makes Malaysian Food Into 3d Paper Craft

Student Caitlin Choo Makes Malaysian Food Into 3d Paper Craft

Paper Bites is a project series where Malaysian food is made out of paper in 3D form. A way to introduce delicious and unique food from all 14 states in Malaysia to both locals and foreigners. It acts as a souvenir for people to bring back to their home, a forever manifestation of the wonderful memory of having a good meal, a bite to be remembered.

Food is one of the creator’s inspirations that made her want to do this project as chefs and hawkers put in different ingredients and also love and passion to come out with such a delicious plate of food. Thus, making food out of paper has served the same values as these chefs and hawkers out there that have poured out their love, passion, and dedication towards their food. Turning cooking into crafting, something that is simple and more people can take part in it, capturing hearts and minds.

In this series, the creator focused on Melaka food as it has been a while since she has been there. Picking food she so eager to try like Ice Kacang (ABC) (Shaved Ice), Hainanese Chicken Rice, and various Nyonya Kuih. The packaging consists of templates that have different grammages to form different shapes which can be transformed into a food item. There will also be instructions on how to assemble the parts together. The collateral design for the templates includes posters and stickers.

Posters are infographics which are the breakdowns each of the food, the ingredients being used that brings out these delicacies. The stickers can be shared among friends to spread the information around about the project. The illustrations are based on the 3D paper sculpture to relate back to the paper sculpture. The graphics are based on the decorative tiles that can be found around Melaka.
