Maria Cano Designs SMART Cuna as a Multisensory Speaker for Early Childhood Wellbeing

SMART Cuna is a Bluetooth speaker specifically designed for babies and young children, offering a unique combination of sound and interactive lighting to create a multi-sensory and emotionally enriching experience. Far beyond a typical speaker, SMART Cuna is conceived as a nurturing presence that supports children’s emotional well-being and sensory development throughout the day.
This device seamlessly adapts to different daily routines—whether during moments of play, rest, or sleep—by offering relaxing music, gentle lullabies, or ambient nature sounds that help calm the child and establish a comforting rhythm. The integrated lighting system, featuring adjustable brightness and color temperature, enhances the environment and can be tailored to suit any mood or activity. A soft warm light may signal bedtime, while cooler tones can accompany play or waking routines, gently guiding the baby through different times of day.
One of SMART Cuna’s most notable features is its Bluetooth connectivity, allowing caregivers to control music and lighting remotely through a mobile device. This flexibility ensures personalized and responsive care, giving parents full control to adapt the experience to the baby’s mood, needs, or schedule.
Designed with both safety and aesthetics in mind, SMART Cuna features smooth, rounded edges and is made from non-toxic, baby-safe materials. Its compact and friendly shape makes it suitable for nurseries or children’s play areas, blending technology with a soothing visual presence.
More than a functional device, SMART Cuna acts as an emotional bridge, enhancing the caregiver-child bond through gentle sounds and calming lights. It promotes healthy routines, encourages restful sleep, and supports sensory exploration in a safe and engaging way.
The design process included 3D modeling and dual-color 3D printing, along with prototyping using light sensors that synchronize lighting effects with audio playback—bringing the SMART Cuna concept to life as both a design object and a caring companion.
