Modern Drugs Packaging for Antidepressants

Modern Drugs is a conceptual packaging design project that explores the personal, emotional, and aesthetic dimensions of antidepressant use. It is rooted in my own two-year experience of taking various psychiatric medications during a period of intense healing and self-recovery. Over time, I found myself thinking not only about the chemical effects of these pills, but also about their presence in my daily life—their textures, their side effects, their quiet, persistent role in helping me maintain balance.

This project reimagines the visual identity of several antidepressants I have personally used, including Atarax, Zoloft, and Lamictal. Each medication is represented through a unique packaging concept that captures the subjective sensations and emotional landscapes they evoked. For example, Atarax is visualized through soft gradients and fog-like textures, symbolizing the gentle sedation and anxiety relief it provided. Zoloft, which brought unexpected weight loss and a floating sense of detachment, is reflected in airy forms and disrupted typographic elements. Lamictal’s packaging evokes the instability of mood swings—vivid contrasts, fragmented compositions, and shifting color palettes.

Instead of sterile pharmaceutical aesthetics, Modern Drugs embraces metaphor, tactility, and personal storytelling. It transforms the medication box into a site of reflection—less a container, more a diary page. This project seeks to destigmatize psychiatric treatment and offer a more humane, visual language around mental health—one shaped not just by function, but by feeling.
