It’s about the stadiums. It’s about the fans. It’s about the songs. It’s Home. Home: Volume One is the first in a series of books by illustrator Marcus Marritt and creative studio Pim-Pam as they look at 30 of the world’s greatest club football stadiums and the songs that make them so special.
Finding unique views and perspectives in a minimalistic drawing style with a strong focus on light and shadow is key to Marcus’s work. The illustrations capture viewpoints and hidden observations from around each stadium that play with scale, recognisable characteristics and colours.
What it means to be at home, in a stadium, singing the songs and feeling the atmosphere of match day is something that’s best experienced in person. Home: Volume One is a celebration and a documentation of 30 of the greatest club football stadiums, giving the viewer a chance to explore some of the most famous homes and songs from football across the world.
Each stadium is a removable print sized at 12” x 16”, with the information detailed in its Home language as a tribute. The featured stadia in this first volume include everywhere from Allianz Arena, Anfield and Celtic Park to Old Trafford, San Siro and Stade Vélodrome.
Illustrator Marcus Marritt said: “It was only once I had connected with Luke at Pim-Pam did a clear idea form between us on how to format and structure this series of books, to be more than simply a collection of my stadia illustrations,” “Alongside my work on the illustrations, it has very much been the ‘designer’s eye’ from Pim-Pam that has given this series real context, to do all we can to recognise the lyrics and atmosphere of the places fans call Home.
“Deciding to develop and publish a book during a global pandemic was something that kept us sane and also felt right. My instincts tell me that crafting this first volume during this last year, to be celebrating the physical structures and spaces that have been locked off to us all, was meant to be. Whatever may come of this series, we can always look back on Volume One knowing that this was all born during a time when we knew very much the value of those special places we call Home.”
Pim-Pam’s Luke McCarthy adds: “It’s been a great experience coming together with Marcus and developing the book. From the initial idea and thinking, which started long ago actually on the pitch playing games together — to now self-publishing and planning out the series. There’s a real partnership between us and it’s exciting to see the response so far on Home: Volume One. There’s more to come as we plan ahead to an exhibition and book launch event in Glasgow, October 2020. And beyond that some exciting opportunities down the line.”
