B&B Studio Harnesses Contemporary Craft in Plymouth Gin Refresh for Pernod Ricard

B&B Studio Harnesses Contemporary Craft in Plymouth Gin Refresh for Pernod Ricard

In an ever-expanding gin category, Plymouth Gin remains the original craft product. Handmade to this day at England’s oldest working distillery, Plymouth has been made to the same recipe since 1793, providing a classic, perfectly balanced taste that never goes out of style.

B&B studio were briefed to bring contemporary freshness and craft to the existing design without compromising recognition and credibility or resorting to flat modern graphics. Instead, the ship is redrawn in a deep blue, accentuating the brand’s nautical colour palette and letting white space bring a premium feel. The existing copper colour has been brightened and used with greater restraint for a stronger effect, while brand storytelling has been rationalised and made relevant to a modern-day consumer.

With sustainability credentials in mind, the new design eliminates all single-use plastic: paper labels and recyclable PET closures have been introduced, and the brand’s monk icon is now embossed onto the back of the bottle rather than printed on a plastic wrap. The bottle has been light-weighted, maintaining its iconic ‘sea-green’ colour and ‘sea-worn’ shape while saving 60 tonnes of carbon a year (based on sales of 600,000 bottles). B&B also introduced an ‘eyebrow’ to the bottle structure, helping integrate the label into the overall design to achieve a more sophisticated result.

Shaun Bowen, Creative Partner at B&B studio, says: “Plymouth is a classic gin with an iconic bottle, but a number of design and production details were in need of improvement. By taking a holistic approach and keeping an eye on the bigger picture, we’ve been able to make subtle changes that add up to a significant difference – without losing what makes the brand special.”

B&B’s new designs can be seen across Plymouth Gin’s full range worldwide, including Plymouth Gin Original Strength, Plymouth Gin Navy Strength, Plymouth Sloe Gin and Plymouth Fruit Cup.
