Alegrete1375 Wine: Crafting Uniqueness from Ancient Vines to Limited Edition Bottles

Alegrete1375 Wine: Crafting Uniqueness from Ancient Vines to Limited Edition Bottles

There was a very, very old vineyard that produced only 1375 bottles of wine. We numbered them, one by one, with their bizarre shapes

Located beside the ancient Marvão castle, which dates back to the year 877 and is perched on a cliff overlooking the Serra de São Mamede mountain range, the small vineyard that gave rise to the Alegrete Wine is also extremely old.
Because it is so old, the vineyard only produces a small amount of grapes, but with great quality. The vines’ trunks have twisted over the years, acquiring extraordinary shapes that look like figures and symbols.
Therefore, we decided to use the trunks/the shapes to create a numerical font inspired by them and numbered each of these utterly exclusive 1375 bottles, making each one unique and valuable.
In wine language, when bottles are numbered, it express always an exclusivity or limited production. But the numbering use to be discreet, often only on the back label.
But, in Alegrete1375, the typeface (numbering) appears as the main visual element of the brand, big size on the front label. With that, we wanted to transmit two things; the exclusivity of the project, with only 1375 bottles produced, and the oldness of the vineyard with this bizarre shapes developed over the years.
We looked for what most resembled each number on each trunk, cut it out and
explored the structural and stylistic relationships required to produce a harmonious group of numbers.

Market information:
Each bottle is sold for 60 Euros in boxes of 2 bottles and the owners, Susana Esteban and her longtime friend António Menano have created a Club, a truly exclusive project, restricted to only 200 members to sell Alegrete. This is the sole channel available to acquire the new Alegrete 1375 white and red wines, which are the result of a limited production of 1375 bottles each. They are available for purchase in elegant wooden cases with numbered labels, exclusive to each member.
